As the waves pass through you, turn sideways and they are not a problem. Big ones should go over you. It is not that hard, really.

I disagree with Karl about the face up figure four fin installation method. To me it is easier to do it face down in the water. After all we have floatation from the BC and a mask and reg/snorkel. I find it easier to bend forward and allow the effects of buoyancy and viscosity of the water to help in fin installation.
