When you purchase a tank, whatever the hydro and VIP date are, insist that the tank be VIP'd before being handed over to you. Look in it yourself, just for the learning experience.
Why assume that the tank is OK?
Being more clever is in making sure that your new tank is in good shape, not in feeling like you beat the system on a couple months of VIP...
