Man injured by speed boat while spearfishing
A 25-year-old man was spearfishing less than a quarter-mile off Birdrock when he was hit by a 20-foot speed boat as he surfaced, lifeguards said.
The man's fishing partner flagged down the boaters, who rushed the injured fisherman to Mission Bay Channel where lifeguards administered first aid. The man had lacerations to the head and possible neck and back injuries, said San Diego lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma.
He was taken to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition last night, a hospital spokesman said.
San Diego police are investigating, Lerma said. The man's name was being withheld while his relatives were notified.
