The insurance issue is common to all of us. I expect it is because Dana is more remote to Catalina and the more common dive sites. I run from east Long Beach and I usually have to travel about 4 or 5 miles more than the San Pedro boats, depending on the site.
It's about 26 miles for me to get to the West End. From Dana it's 46 miles.
I am about 55 miles from the east end of San Clemente Island. Fom Dana it's 51 miles, not a lot of savings.
If you would like to have a boat run out of Dana you would have to be prepared to pay a lot more for the trip. For example, the run to the west end of Catalina would cost me about $180.00 more in fuel alone from Dana point. Plus the additional time would limit me to two dives per day if I did not hire a second captain (more expense).
