During August and the first week or so of September, lobsters molt. As with all crustaceans, they outgrow their shell and need to break out of the old one and hide while the new shell hardens. They split between the tail and caripace, sometimes breaking the shell into two pieces. If you dive a reef that is home to a lot of bugs you will find hundreds of empty shells this time of year.
