Harvey, I noticed the same thing diving Catalina in early June. I asked a Marine Biologist, and she said that it is diverse range of pathogenic parasites, bacteria and fungi. The blades on the giant kelp only last about 4 months, and the fronds about 6, and then the plant generates new ones. According to her, when the blades are dying, these organisms are abundant on the blades and fronds...
