When the critter tries to get out of a bucket of water it will make a mess. Use a bucket of Ice that will make them lethargic leading to a les messy car for the trip home.
On the lighter side.
If you keep the water cold and aerated the critter will last at least a day or two. That is until the water becomes warm or fouled.
