He was not on a rebreather. Unfortunately, this incident happend just before I arrived at the point with a couple of friends. Another diver I spoke with who said he had talked to the instructor involved, told me that initially he thought it was an embolism. But on reflection he decided it was more likely a heart attack, since the student had a pre-existing heart condition for which he had received a waiver from his doctor.
