I was surprised to find how little the commercial guys actually pay.

Each lobster operator is required to get an anual permit for $265 (crewmembers pay $125) plus $90 for the commercial opertator license. DFG sold only 228 lobster operator permits and 74 crewmember permits in 2002.

What makes the commercial lobster permit so valuable is that in order to get one, you had to have one in the prior year--supposedly, no new permits are being issued (although there appear to be a large number of appeals to obtain such a permit--outcomes not stated).

Also, those with a trap permit have no limit on the number of traps they can set.
