2) The stinger is a barbed spine at the base of the tail, it is not the tail.
Batrays with shortend tails are no uncommon, perhaps they loose them to predators.
Stingers are sometimes removed by fishermen as trophies. I myself was guilty of this when I was in high school 30 years ago.
