I used Larium when I was in Ecuador. The side effects were too much for me, so I stopped using it.
The side effect I experienced was vivid nightmares. I was camping on the bank of a river in the Amazon and woke myself(and the entire camp) with my maniacal laughter. I dreamt that I had killed everyone in camp and was eating one of the members...and laughing.
I spent a year in South East Asia, didn't take any anti-malarials and had no problems.
It depends on where you're going. Africa is horrendous and even with the drugs your chances of getting Malaria are high.
