I don't use a swim step on my boat. I have one of those dive ladders that is really nothing more than a piece of piping with three or four cross sections for footing. I got mine from West Marine and it works out great. I remove it from the water when I travel and the low profile support that attaches to the boat really is clean and stays out of the way when I fish.

Pretty reasonably priced and best of all they really carry the weight well. I literally can climb out with tank and weights on and a full bag of scallops attached. Like the others I have the clips that I hang over but only really use them in heavy seas. It's just too easy to not take it off and exit with the dive ladder.
