For underwater you must first limit your choices to those cameras that have housings.
Canon and Olympus make housings, and Olympus also makes macro and wide angle lenses.
The pictures I post in my dive reports are 1.3 megapixels.
Unless you plan on making very large enlargments, almost all present cameras do ok.
I too am just starting out and I choose an Olympus D-40 becasue of the small size.
The housing was $300
A refurb camera was $370
An Olympus wide angle lens was $350
NiMH batteries $40
(3) 128mb smartmemoey cards $150
Rayovac AA/AAA/9V NiMH rapid charger (the best on the market as of today) $34
still to buy strobes, arms, & trays
yes it is yet another money sink!
However here is my first attempt at natural light photos on a dive at San Clemente.
