A large portion of the customer base in SoCal is tourists. With Disneyland, Sea World, etc. there are other draws for visitors. Although the North Coast is more beautiful above and below the surface, a captain still needs to fill his boat if he wants to make a decent living. Plenty of SoCal boats have ceased operations over the past ten years due to lack of customers. I would think a string of sixpack charters would have a better go of it on the North Coast. There are enough divers there without private boats to fill them, but little chance to have 30+ divers two to three times per week. With the calmer seas down south, some boats become fishing and/or whale watch boats after the Summer.
