For one, I do most of my diving in and around Laguna Beach, so I don't really have a choice due to local regulations. But, I also do a lot of long surface swims and, even though I am most often on my back, I often prefer to breathe from my snorkel, especially if it's a bit rough.
However, though I always bring it, I usually don't wear it on boat dives.
