Since nearshore commercial fishing is such and environmentally degrading activity and competes directly with the local recreational fishing industry, what about orgainizing an initiative to put on the next state-wide election ballot to ban commercial fishing (especially drag-netting) from the Channel Islands or maybe even state waters? What do you think? Would it work? Does the state of California have jurisdiction to enact such an initiative if it wins? Should some commercial fishing practices be exempt or specifically targeted? Any advice or opinions are welcome.
