I read an article several years ago that mentioned the fact that the bull spiney lobsters become agressive much like their counterparts in other animal species. They will kill and eat smaller males they feel are threatening their breeding zone. I'm not sure how much of this goes on, having never witnessed it firsthand, but it would seem to indicate that the removal of a larger male would increase the chances of successful breeding by more smaller males, thereby increasing population.
