During the 80's I made literally hundreds of trips to Catalina. In those days the kelp was indeed alive with constant splashes and boils everywhere! I used to take the hooks off jigs and watch 50 or more calicos chase it at once.

On my very first fishing trip to catalina in 78', we caught all kinds of rockfish, treefish, cabazon in 40ft of water right next to Eagle Rock. One of the deckhands told me that the treefish i had just released was 20 years old....

That's when it hit me that what were doing was unsustainable. I was arguing about the depletion back in the 80's. So much has changed since then. That is why the reserves are the best news for OUR waters in many years. I personally welcome any and all new conservation measures that will be put into place. It's not about now, it's about 20 years from now....
