"Near SF" is pretty vague. It would be helpful if
you said what town you lived in.

Be sure you are comparing apples to apples when
checking prices. There are several components to
the cost: Personal gear (mask, fins, snorkle,
gloves, booties), Rental gear (wet suit, tanks,
BC, reg and guages), text, the class, the ocean
weekend (instruction, maybe motel), C-card.
different shops include different items in their
advertised price. In total they will work out to
nearly the same.
