What you are seeing are called winged oysters. Most of them came up with the last big El Nino. They are closely related to pearl oysters, and you see them in the gorgonians because starfish can't get them there. Too much stinging of the sensitive tube feet by the gorgonians. I've never tried to eat one but I've heard they are just OK.
