There are lots of good shops around here; personally, I started buying from Dive N Surf in Redondo Beach (310) 372-8423 about 10 years ago because the staff took a genuine interest in the kind of diving I wanted to do and got to know me individually. I was still in school and they worked with me on price and quality. I wound up teaching there eventually. John Conroy is the guy to see there for a package deal.
There's a huge annual sale starting Feb. 1 called the "Yard Sale", where the store discounts gear by the tentload and manufacturers' reps are there to discuss the latest equipment in detail. You can also meet people from the Dive N Surf dive team (dive club) this Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a big group dinner meeting and program at the National Sports Bar & Grill in Torrance, on Sepulveda between Crenshaw and Hawthorne. Newcomers are very much encouraged. It's a good place to get some local dive buddies.
