Divers sometimes ignore the "warnings" and come up saying, "Yeah, I noticed the regulator was puling really hard but I didn't give it much thought."
Also with a lot of the newer regs on the market today, especially the upper-end high-performance ones, there's very little noticeable difference when dropping down to lower tank pressures, making monitoring your gauge even more essential.
But what I meant about noticing it on the exhale, was that at SOME point, regardless of how hard you're working to get it, you will have taken the "last" breath. But you won't realize this until you finish your exhale and attempt to inhale again and get . . . nothing.
