Several years ago, my wife called all the students who had been open water certified by our local dive shop (several hundred students) to survey their continuing dive activity. The results were interesting:
About 1/3 of the students were no longer diving.
About 1/3 of the students were diving on warm water vacations.
About 1/3 of the students were doing local diving.
The 1/3 that were actively diving local waters were the ones that had bought their gear! The rental students didn't continue diving.
