I joined in on the resort diving at Club Meds for several years before I was certified. A shark dive in Tahiti was what convinced me that I wanted to get a real C card. I envied everyone who had a camera on that dive. After I went through a certification class the first piece of dive gear that I owned was a housing for a disposable camera. Everything that followed only happened so that I could take more and better underwater photos.
Maybe having a motivation to dive is the most important thing to sticking with it. I liked being able to do about 15 dives before I decided if this sport was for me or not.
