I'm kinda on both sides of the coin here. I originally learned in 89, got my PADI OW cert and didn't dive again for 10 years. The problem was I learned in Alaska and my first open water diving experiences were terrible! We had rental dry suits, cold water and no vis to speak of once all the students were in the water. I didn't see the point of ever doing it again.
In 1999 I moved to CA and decided to re-certify for an upcoming trip to Australia. I wanted to dive on the GBR. First time in the water at Catalina I was hooked. I now understood why people do this sport. Everywhere you looked was a beautiful landscape full of life. I enjoy diving warm water locations, but my heart belongs to the kelp forests and I'll dive here forever or as long as I am able.
