When I got certified I bought a butterfly wing and hardpack, steel 72 tanks and a USDivers Conshelf regulator. After replacing these items with more gear that was also replaced later on I agree with Marta and Ross that a backplate and wing is a wise investment. It is adjustable and will last you the rest of your life. That said, I would still use the rental gear during the class. I've seen way too many people buy gear before they realized that diving was not for them. If you find that you will only dive once or twice a year you will save a ton of money if you rent gear. If, however you become dive animals like Ross and Marta, get the right equipment that will serve your purposes. Don't compromise by getting whatever the shop wants to sell. Check out some more diving bulletin boards and ask opinions. You will definately see a pattern develope.
