Anyone with experience can pretty accurately judge if game is legal by eyeball. If you haven't noticed, dive boat crew seem to be extremely aware of what is going on on the boat. The problem I had was when a DM said that he was going to measure every bug taken on the boat. That is far more intrusive than the crew just keeping an experienced eye open and shows a huge lack of respect for the divers. I take my hunting seriously. If he won't take my word for it, he can call F&G. The crew knows what is going on and can deal with a problem if needed.
Note, I have politely advised a person that he had short abalone. Technically, the crew has no more authority than me. ... They can always call the F&G to meet the boat though if it is appropriate.
Enjoy, seahunt
