I dove the Redondo Canyon quite a bit this winter but didn't see more than a couple of squid at any one time. In contrast to last year, when I saw the squid blizzard for several consecutive nights.
However, there were A LOT of eggs from time to time this season. One diver I spoke to said he dove at 10 p.m. one night and saw very few eggs, but he came back at 8 p.m. the next day to find a blanket of eggs. Obviously timing is everything -- tide, temperature, phase of the moon, who knows?
Also, I dove at Leo Carrillo one night and saw about a dozen squid boats working about 100 yards off Zuma. I presume Dume Canyon has squid runs too.
