Historically the DFG has favored the commercial fishing industry over sport fishing when allocating fish stocks for harvest. This, even though sport fishing is a much greater part of our states economy than commercial fishing. AB670 would direct the DFG to reorder their priorities to favor sport fishing over commercial fishing when allocating fish stocks for take. Although this does not address that the overall allocations must be reduced, it does say that sport-fishing interests should get the first consideration when decisions are made.
AB670 is now in being considered by the Assembly Water Parks and Wildlife Committee.
We divers are a very small minority, especially when compared to those who participate in sport fishing. If we are to have issues that are important to us succeed we must enlist the support of a large portion of who fish, because they have far greater numbers. I personally believe this in an issue we can agree upon, and this may go a ways in healing any rifts, which exist between the sport fishing and diving communities.
As member of both communities I wholeheartedly support this bill even though it lacks firm guidelines for reducing the overall take to allow our fish stocks to recover. It is however a step in the right direction.
