If I'm diving in calm seas at night I'll usually hang a million candlepower light off the side of my boat. In clear water such as Catalina I can see the light as deep as 150 feet+. One opening night of lobster season a few years ago I was diving at Bird Rock and had to make a safety stop in a swarm of squid at fifteen feet, thanks to my light.
