I grew up right on the beach (LA South Bay) and there were lots of black widows then -- there still are. We would go to a couple of vacant sand lots (NONE of those exist anymore) and catch them and put them in jars so we could see the red hour glass on their underside. Every time I overturn something in the yard or garage or wherever, I still allow a little extra time and care to let the spiders clear out. And I still look to see if any of them are black widows. Look for the small shiney brown ones also, these are the males, and if present, there could be females near by.
