I would not fully discount the sighting being a large soupfin. They fatten up and become very mean looking when they fully mature. I caught one very large one off the Manhattan Beach pier in the early 70's.
I spent a great deal of time fishing for sharks from shore in the late 60's and early 70's. There are many other large sharks in the area as well. Juvenile whites are not uncommon, and many have been caught off local piers over the years. I have also witnessed a large hammerhead caught off the Manhattan Beach pier. I when I fished for them I caught many very large batrays off piers and in the surf.
I suspect that there are many large predator species that observe us and we don't see. Too bad you did not see it as well. It was probably an impressive site.
