The right sites in Monterey are fine for the newbie. Breakwater would be a good choice. As
are McAbee and Lovers Pt., but they both have
rules for divers that you better understand or
you could get a ticket (where to park, unload,
what times you can dive, classes).

I've only seen vis of 5' or less on the bottom on
about two dives in Monterey, and I've done about
800 dives there (120 last year, 50 so far this
year (we got off to a slow start with bad weather). Vis is over 20' most of the time. I've
seen 90' a couple of times.

Temps last weekend were 48ish.

Monstery Beach deserves LOTS of respect. The beach
is steep, and faces directly into the NW swells.
There are no offshore islands for protection. You
have to walk away from it one day in three. Some
call it Mortuary Beach.
DO NOT DIVE MONASTERY UNLESS YOU GO WITH SOMEONE WHO
KNOWS HOW TO DIVE IT AND CAN SHOW YOU HOW.
