Reefseekers up in Beverly Hills does a good job with first time Calif. divers. in fact, they'll send a DM in the water with you if you want, and won't charge for it. Not sure any other shop does that.
No idea re: your skills, but Calif. diving can be quite a shock the first time (specially if you haven't ever worn a wetsuit - lucky girl!)
Trips to Santa Barbara Island will virtually guarantee some sea lion encounters. Other locations are hit and miss.
