It has been years. Since I dove Southern California, but I really miss those days. I dive the Monterey area now-lots of sea lions :-) I will base this post on my memories of down south and limit it to shore dives.

Some may disagree with me, but the two best shore dives in Southern California are La Jolla cove and Casino point. Neither would be my first choice for sea lions, but for a healthy sample of what California diving is about. There are numerous good shore dives in Laguna.

If you have never worn a wet suit before. I would practice with one while snokeling, before scuba. They are akward till you get used to it.

Sea lions are protected critters. It is against the law to disturb them, but it is okay for them to harrass you. Don't try to pet one. They do bite if they feel threatened.
