I've been happy with the Encore. It is the sister ship to the Great Escape - another great boat.
On weekdays it can be difficult to hunt up a dive boat in the LA area. You might try one out of Catalina - they go daily, or you might like a run down to San Diego - they go daily also. Some good dive spots for an out of towner might be:
1. San Clemente Island - usually has the best visibility. You will probably like it there.
2. Catalina - Italian Gardens for the Giant Sea Bass - they are kind of a special sight.
3. Santa Barbara Island is famous for its sea lion population.
4. The Oil Rigs are cool.
5. The Yukon in San Diego is a good dive.
It all depends on what you like. Most dive boats won't take you to the "bad spots" - they really do try to please.
