The boats will take you to the good spots. Go to http://californiadiveboats.com/ and see which boats are docked nearest you (probably Long Beach). Go to their web sites and find a trip you want to go on. It might actually be easier for you to dive San Diego. The drive would not be too bad and there is some good diving in SD including wreck alley.
