What was the psi that you wanted to be topped off??? Would it make a noticeable bottom time difference? How many breaths can you get from a couple of hundred psi? Do you ask for a top off on boat dives after your "hot & dry" fill?
Do you bash the boats that fill dry and won't top off your tank?
Maybe he thought you used the air on an aborted dive and were trying to demand a free refill.
