As an aside, I remember hearing about a paraplegic's attempt to swim to Catalina a few years ago (I'm not sure if this was the guy or someone else).
Apart from the sheer magnitude of the endeavor, what I remember most was hearing that the sanctioning body for open ocean swimming wouldn't recognize the crossing because the swimmer had to tow a float to keep his legs up and/or to keep him on a straight course. The organization said that swimmers couldn't use any floation! I hope they reconsidered their ridiculous position.
