On the Labor Day weekend trip via the Great Escape we found visibility at San Celemente to be anywhere from 40 to 60+ feet. Not the great visibility that San Clemente is known for, but not shabby either. Visibility that weekend on the backside of Catalina was probably 60 feet also. The swell was not bad at all.

I've heard that the front of Catalina is still a bit green with lower visibility, but I haven't been there myself lately.
