Good question. And it's not just California. They're having similar conditions (not as cold, but cooler water and low vis) down in the Sea of Cortez and in the Florida Keys as well.
On top of that, there was a story last week about the Ward Bank Ice Shelf breaking off (it's the size of Lake Tahoe) in the Artic, another story about how Bering Sea whaling in the 50s (when they killed about half a million whales) had a domino effect on the eco-system there that devastated it and is still being felt today, and another story some weeks back that estimates that the worldwide shartk population is now 10% of what it used to be.
We're screwing up this planet left and right and there seems to be no end in sight. I certainly don't know what the answers are, but when you step back and take a look at this bigger picture, it certainly makes the things we seem to get overly excited about here (nitrox or no nitrox, long hose, solo diving, rec vs. tec, etc., etc.) seem awfully frivolous and picayune.
