How do you learn to go bug hunting?

How do you learn to hunt for bugs? Is the best place to start on a Lobster boat trip? A beach?
A remedial Lobster hunting class for the SCUBA challenged?
I'm new to diving, just got my OW this summer.
I live in Central California and can go to Ventura area or LA or Orange county.
I have no idea where to start. I bought the DVD "California Lobster Hunting", now what?
