The only motive in the beginning was to stay alive with rigid protocols for extreme environments. The post was not slanted but a commentary on some ideas amongst a community that needed extreme cohesion at some point. The only motive was to make dealing with hazards way outside the norm less of a risk. To this point the DIR philosophy stands on its own merits. Like every thing some want to commercialise, and to that end the critics have a point. You do not have to care about it, accept it, or understand it. Although for a specific group it holds a high priority, in that it provides a safe way to accomplish an end goal. You can be critical of peoples attitudes but not of a philosophy that deals with and promotes safety for a certain diving community.
