Just for luck. I've had surprises when jumping in.
If I plan to pause at the surface before going down, I almost always go in regulator in mouth. I breathe around it before jumping to save every breath. This is how I did it at the rigs and how I do it off a small boat.
Still, normally I jump in and go down without surfacing, so the regulator is in the mouth anyway.
