Most likely you would want to go south to Monterey for a charter boat trip. Check http://californiadiveboats.com/ for a boat and see what their schedule is.
If you are a good diver and conditions are good, you could dive the beautiful North Coast. See the report below or the repotrts at www.diver.net/seahunt
Now if you're a real good diver, a little nuts and you have a real need, you can dive the coast below San Francisco. email me then. It's beautiful, but more than challenging.
Enjoy the diving, seahunt

How much cold water experience do you have? How
much kelp experience? A PADI AOW from the tropics
isn't terribly meaningful in Monterey.

Seahunt is right, you'll need to go to Monterey.
Christmas/New Years can be the best diving of the
year IF the sea conditions let us dive at all.

This is mostly SoCal folks with a few NorCal folks
like me. A lot of NorCal folks hang out at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ba_diving/. Follow
the link to Files and then to WebPage and there's
a "New Monterey Divers" page you should read.
