Many of the guys on my boat used those little three-pronged garden cultivators with a wrist lanyard.

I used one that looked like an ice axe with three tines 1/4 inch diameter by 4 inches on one side and a flat surface that was about 2 X 4 inches by 1/4 thick. The handle was probably 18 inches long with a long wrist strap. It worked really well for both holding and digging. I did manage to snap off the handle during the tusk excavation!

Cap'n Phil loaned it to me, and did not look pleased when I brought it back in pieces.
