Hospital Point in La Jolla is good if conditions are right. Parking is better there than at La Jolla Cove.
Late December is the right time for squid runs, when we have them in San Diego (haven't had any to speak of for the last several years). Makes for a great night dive at La Jolla Shores. Check with one of the local dive shops when you get to San Diego to see if one is happening.
