The Department shares your concerns regarding the squid fishery. It is a unique fishery for many reasons. We have in fact drafted a squid fishery management plan that takes into account the risks and benefits. We will be asking the Fish and Game Commission in May or June to adopt regulations that will protect the fishery for both human use and its ecological role as a critical prey species.
