FYI -- Welch Allyn has developed a more robust version of the 10W ballast/bulb combination (used in the LC and Halcyon line). I'm fairly sure the new bulb is compatible with the old ballasts, but not 100 percent on that. Here's all the info I have:

<consist of twin igniters to improve overall ignition reliability. The changes to the bulb consist of a shorter and thicker glass tube to increase durability. As a result of these changes the 10watt will be slightly brighter but have a shorter (300hr) life expectancy.

To test the durability of the new bulb the manufacturer repeatedly dropped a hand held light with a 10watt bulb from 4ft. The new bulb had a 90% survivability rate versus 10% for the current bulb.>>
