They live less than 1 year, so each years recruitement is solely dependent on the spawn of the previous generation. There is absolutely no discrimination on the part of the squid fishers as to whether the they have spawned or not at the time they are extracted. Under the current hands-off management scheme we must rely on the vagaries of the ocean conditions to determine the overall health of the squid population.
This is absolutely unacceptable.
